On January 31st, 1957 the Canadian parliament proclaimed "A day of thanksgiving for a bountiful harvest with which Canada has been blessed", cementing a tradition going back to Samuel Champlain whose settlers formed the "Order of Good Cheer" and shared food with the First Nations people at harvest time.
