Hope you’re having a great semester and hope your midterms treat you well! This June is jampacked with events from what WiCS is planning to all the fun pride events happening this month!

WiCS Events:

Cross Stitching and Embroidery Night:

Join us for a cozy and creative evening of stitching, chatting, and community! The perfect way to destress during mid-term season! Led by special guest Samantha Jewett (WiCS Outreach Coordinator), you’ll learn essential techniques, tips, and tricks to create your own embroidery or cross-stitched piece of art. Choose from a selection of beginner-friendly fun feminist/queer/punny tech patterns or bring your own to work on!

Whether you come to learn, laugh, or just get a few stitches in, this event is all about community, creativity, and slowing down in the best way. Spaces are limited—reserve your hoop now!

Pride in STEM Panel

Are you part of the 2SLGBTQ+ community, looking for even more pride this month, and/or interesting in learning from queer professionals in STEM? Then come to the Pride in STEM Panel to ask queer and gender diverse professionals from a range of fields about their experiences as being out in STEM!

Time: 4 PM – 6 PM

Location: DC 1302, Davis Centre

Boba tea will be provided for all in-person registrants.

WiCS/WiE Fireside Chat with Joelle Pineau

Join us for a fireside chat and networking reception (dinner provided) with Joelle Pineau! Joelle was recently the former Meta VP for AI research (stepped down May 30), and still is a leading Canadian AI researcher, mother of 4 kids, and strong advocate for women in computing and AI. 

Pineau is known for developing algorithms that allow learning in partially complex domains, as well as new approaches to personal medicine, using data from various sources to generate new treatment strategies.

WiCS Women in AI: Prof Talk

Join us for an exciting session featuring a professor specialized in AI research who will be sharing her experiences as a woman in the field and giving us a look into the exciting work she’s currently doing. Whether you’re interested in AI, research, or just want to learn from her journey, this is a great opportunity to connect and ask questions.

Pride in STEM Networking Social

Haven’t found your pride yet with our Pride in STEM Panel? Then Come meet others just like you at the Pride in STEM Networking Social! We are pulling out all the stops for this event, including food, drag, and a place to show you are proud!

Date: June 24, 2025

Time: 6:00 PM – 7:30 PM (doors at 5:30)

Location: SLC Bomber

Come drop in to have fun with friends, staff and faculty from across STEM. The event is free and there is no need to register!

 

Math Ready Day – Call for Volunteers!

WiCS is putting on a Meet and Greet for incoming students, and we need all the help we can get for running a great event! This call is for anyone interested in being a volunteer for the 2025 Ready Day, including helping with serving bubble tea or helping start conversations!

WiCS Study Room – Register to Get a Fob

It’s a new term, and time to register to use the WiCS Study Room! This quiet study room located at DC 2509 has whiteboards, a couch, a microwave, and a beautiful view. Any WiCS student can register to use the study room from 7am to midnight for free!

This is also a reminder that garbage pickup for all offices and meeting rooms has switched from a weekly to monthly schedule. If you notice your garbage overflowing, please empty the garbage bin into the nearest garbage in the main hallways. To maintain cleanliness and prevent odors, avoid putting any food-related items in the garbage.

Queer Life Fair

Find Your Community, Celebrate Your Pride! Looking to get involved, find support, or just hang out in a space where you can actually be yourself? We’ve got you covered—there’s something for everyone! Join us for a vibrant celebration of queer life, filled with affirming spaces, queer-friendly resources, and opportunities to connect with campus groups and local organizations.

Queer Film Series: Matinée Screening of "Rosie"

In honour of National Indigenous History Month and Pride Month, the Faculty of Mathematics, in collaboration with the Office of Indigenous Relations and Princess Cinemas, invites you to a special matinée Queer Film Series screening of the film Rosie! Rosie is a powerful story that celebrates identity, acceptance, and chosen family.

Jane Street is hosting a Women+ Summer Social in NYC on June 10. If you are working, studying, living in, or visiting NYC, we’d love to meet you then! We’ll have Streeters there you can speak with, plenty of food, and swag for you to take before you head out.

Tech+ Mentorship Program

Tech+ Mentorship Applications are OPEN for Spring 2025! Apply by Wednesday, June 4 @ 11:59PM to be a Mentor or Mentee! The Tech+ 1:1 mentorship program connects newcomers to tech with upper years and alumni for guidance, growth, and support. Mentors can help with resumes, interview prep, goal-setting, and more through casual, personalized chats. Tech+ Call for Upper-Year Panellists

Tech+ is looking for speakers for an Alumni/Upper-Year panel on Thursday, June 26th. We want to hear about your co-op choices, pivots, and key lessons learned along the way. WiE Wednesday with Westinghouse

Want information on nuclear technology and clean energy solutions? Women in Engineering is excited to host Westinghouse for WiE Wednesday next week! Join WiE as the Westinghouse team shares valuable insights into their hiring process, what they look for in candidates and how you can kickstart your career with one of the most impactful companies in the energy sector.

WiCS Innovation Fund

The WiCS Innovation Fund supports student-initiated activities such as hackathons, workshops, conferences, and much more, that support women and non-binary students in computing. WiCS will give out two awards worth $500 for Spring’25 initiatives! If you’re interested, send an email to wics@uwaterloo.ca with an explanation of the use (e.g., organizing an event, attending a conference or hackathon) and what you will get out of attending. The Fund will sponsor future events only (not past events).

WiCS Con 2025 Feedback

We asked, and now we act! WiCS Con this year was an overwhelming success, with over 200+ attendees and 70+ participating industry professionals. From the feedback we received, we will keep the parts that you liked including the women in tech panel and networking reception. In our efforts to continuously improve we will also look to get more sessions on computer science in other fields, AI/Machine Learning, and technical interviews.
