Talking to the Internet: An Introduction to APIs

FLIGHT 2026 Workshop Series

Thursday, July 23, 2026 10:00 am - 12:00 pm EDT (GMT -04:00)

Description:

Curious how apps get data from the internet? In this workshop, participants will explore how applications communicate using APIs (Application Programming Interfaces). Using basic coding, you’ll learn how to send requests and work with real data from online services. Along the way, we’ll introduce key concepts like dictionaries and how they help organize and access information returned by APIs. In a hands-on activity, participants will build a simple interactive project that connects to live data.

Format:

Each interactive online workshop will be approx. 2 hours via Zoom, from  10 am - 2 pm ET.  All that is required to join is a computer (or Chromebook), and an internet connection.

Audience:

The FLIGHT (Future Leaders Innovating to Go Higher in Technology) 2026 Workshops are FREE Virtual sessions that offer an introduction to computing for girls and gender diverse students aged 12-18 who self-identify as Black, Indigenous, and People of Colour (BIPOC).
