Bridging the gap between elementary school and university

Waterloo University students headed into public elementary classrooms last week to teach young students science and engage in hands-on learning. But the discussions also focused on what students hoped to do once they left school. During the teaching session, elementary students were given wooden blocks and asked to assemble bridges and arches to demonstrate the effects of force and friction.

Led by Dr. Rania Al-Hammoud of the Civil and Environmental Department, environmental engineering students from UW were given the opportunity to teach the younger students, whilst elementary students were encouraged to consider the benefits of enrolling in higher education. Al-Hammoud is passionate about bringing science to elementary and university students, particularly young girls, who she hopes will become interested in pursuing a career in engineering.
