Waterloo Architecture Alumni Trip | LA BIENNALE DI VENEZIA

The University of Waterloo School of Architecture is excited to bring alumni together for an exciting and eventful trip to Venice during Biennale Architettura 2023. Waterloo Architecture alumni, friends and guests are invited to join in the events to take place October 28-30, 2023. The three-day itinerary includes: a welcoming reception along the Grand Canal, historical walking tour through the streets of Venice with Professor Rick Haldenby, 3-day admission to the La Biennale Architettura 2023 including a private talk and tour of the Canadian Pavilion with Professor Adrian Blackwell, several lunch and dinner socials, and a tasting tour at the Distilleria Nardini, Italy’s first distillery.

Children under 12: Free

DAY 1: Saturday, October 28, 2023  

Morning: Welcome Registration
Location: Casa Artom, Wake Forest University Campus

Waterloo Architecture Alumni Trip | LA BIENNALE DI VENEZIA will launch with registration and a welcome breakfast at the magnificant Casa Artom. Alumni will enjoy stunning views along the Grand Canal, meet with Associate Professor and AAHA curatorial collective member, Adrian Blackwell, and visit with students participating in the Venice Biennale Studio.

Daytime: Walking Tour of Venice with Professor Rick Haldenby

In the afternoon, alumni will spend a memorable afternoon walking the streets of Venice with long-time Waterloo Architecture Faculty member, Professor Rick Haldenby.

Waterloo Architecture grad and former Director of the School, Professor Rick Haldenby founded Waterloo’s highly successful Rome program. Over the past four decades, Haldenby has conducted archaeological work in Italy, Malta, and Tunisia. He is an expert in Mediterranean archaeology and the design and management of historic landscapes and sites. In 2022, Haldenby was inducted in the Order of Canada.

Evening: Dinner Reception
Location: Trattoria Da Gigio, Rio Terà S. Leonardo, 1594, 30121

In the evening, alumni will regather as a group and end their first day enjoying the fine foods of the region. A private reservation will be made for our group.


DAY 2: Sunday, October 29, 2023  

Day Time: Talk and Tour of La Biennale Architettura 2023
Location: Giardini della Biennale, Sestiere Castello 30122

On day two guests will arrive at the Canadian Pavilion in the morning for a light breakfast reception.

Starting with introductions at the Canadian Pavilion's exhibition, Not for Sale! Architects Against Housing Alienation (AAHA) member, Associate Professor Adrian Blackwell, will lead a private tour the group for the morning. Alumni will be accompanied by exhibition participants and Waterloo Architecture faculty, Professor David T Fortin and Associate Professor Jane Mah Hutton. The group will also be accompanied by a studio of 3B Waterloo Architecture students, who will be studying in Venice for the term.

Guests will enjoy lunch in small groups before having time to tour the biennale on their own.

Evening Event: Dinner Reception
Location: Ristorante Taverna al Remer Venezia, Cl. Seconda del Cristo, 5701, 30121

In the evening, alumni will gather with Faculty for a dinner reception held at the charming Taverna al Remer. Just a stone’s throw from the Rialto bridge and facing a suggestive glimpse of the Grand Canal, the dinner menu is inspired by the traditions of Venice, and beyond!


DAY 3: Monday, October 30, 2023  

Day Time: Distillery Tour and Farewell Lunch
Location: Nardini Distillery,
Via Pralongo, 31, 31050 Fornaci TV, Italy

On the last day of the trip, alumni will visit the stunning Nardini distillery, Italy’s first distillery. The Nardini Grappa Distillery was completed in 2004, designed by Massimiliano and Doriana Fuksasin Bassano del Grappa. Alumni will enjoy a tasting and tour of the facility, before ending their three-day trip with a farewell lunch in the nearby the area.

After events: guests are encouraged to re-visit the biennale on their own over the next several days using their 3-day pass.

Please note that details of this itinerary, such as times and locations, are subject to change depending on guest count. A finalized itinerary will be circulated to registered guests in advance of travels.
