Student engagement awards

This category of awards recognizes a variety of non-academic contributions and activities by students. Each award will give the student $250 and will recognize a range of important issues. The student governments WASA (Waterloo Architecture Student Association) and SWAG (Society of Waterloo Architecture Graduates) will be jurying these awards. 

Awards Description
Indigenous Solidarity For activities toward decolonization and indigenous solidarity.
Diasporic Narratives For activities that supports immigrant experiences and the diverse cultures represented at the school.
Environmental Action For activities that fight climate change and advocate for sustainability.
Inclusivity and accessibility For advocacy for inclusivity and accessibility for people of all abilities and genders in the school.
Community Engagement For activities that engage with communities and community organizations outside the university.
Student Life and Wellbeing Award For activities that support student life, mental health and well-being.
Mentorship  For activities that support other students' development
Critical discourse For activities that promote a critical discussion within the school about the relationship between architecture and the world.

Given to the student with the highest academic standing in 1A Fall

The award is given to the student(s) with outstanding design work in 1A (Arch 192)

1B Winter - Arch 193 The award is given to the student(s) with outstanding design work in 1B (Arch 193)
2A Fall - Arch 292 The award is given to the student(s) with outstanding design work in 2A (Arch 292)
2B Spring - Arch 293 The award is given to the student(s) with outstanding design work in 2B (Arch 293)
1A-2B Technology Prize This prize is for the student who has the highest standing in technology courses (Arch 172, 173, 260, 276)
1A-2B Jo Beglo Book Prize The prize is given to the student with outstanding work in Cultural History (Arch 142, 143, 246, 247)
3A Winter - Arch 392

The award is given to the students with outstanding design work in 3A (Arch 392)

3B Fall - Arch 393

The award is given to the student(s) with outstanding design work in 3B (Arch 393)

Rick Haldenby Rome Award Awarded annually to a full-time undergraduate student in the School of Architecture in the Faculty of Engineering who is participating in the Rome program in their 4A fall term.

Given to the student with the highest academic standing in 4A

4A Fall - The Smale Fellowship Given to the student with the highest standing in design and academic averages and play a role in the profession

Submission-based awards 

For this category of awards, students will submit an application using the Undergraduate Award Submission form. Work that was completed by the student (and/or student group) from the previous fiscal year is eligible. The fiscal year is from May to April. 

Awards Description

Norm Li Visualization Award

Several awards are provided annually to a full-time undergraduate student enrolled in any elective or core advanced visualization course in the School of Architecture in the Faculty of Engineering. Students submit a project for consideration as completed in a visualization course.

Energy+Design Award The award is presented to an Architecture student who submits the best energy-related design.
Pella Awards Selection is based on submission and review of a project that demonstrates excellence in sustainable design, and that exemplifies careful consideration of materials, details, placement, and orientation of fenestration.
OAA Exceptional Leadership Through Design Excellence: Equity, Diversity & Inclusion (EDI) and Truth & Reconciliation

The two scholarships are intended to recognize exceptional leadership through design excellence combined with exemplary approaches to projects and/or assignments as they relate to Equity, Diversity, & Inclusion and/or Truth and Reconciliation. 

OAA Exceptional Leadership Through Design Excellence: Sustainability

The two scholarships are intended to recognize exceptional leadership through design excellence combined with innovative approaches to sustainability in an assignment or project. 

CISC Canadian Institute of Steel Construction Award An award is presented annually to a full-time undergraduate student enrolled in the Architecture program who has demonstrated outstanding work in the area of steel design. Selection will be based on project work in a third- or fourth-year Design Studio course. This fund is made possible by a donation from the Canadian Institute of Steel Construction Education Foundation. 
Andrew Levitt Award for Compassion Selection is based on academic achievement (minimum 70% cumulative average) combined with extracurricular involvement or participation in volunteer activities that help improve the student experience. Preference will be given to candidates who have demonstrated care and compassion toward their peers through initiatives related to student wellness. Applications will continue to be accepted until April 30 department deadline. Please submit to archundergradoffice@uwaterloo.ca.
John C. Bennett Travel Bursary for Architectural Studies This award is designated for students pursuing the Rome study program or an international co-op work opportunity.
Waterloo Architecture Student Award in Community Studies Selection is based on research or a project that profiles, researches, explores, and/or works to develop solutions for a not-for-profit organization and/or charity located in the City of Cambridge. This fund is made possible by donations from corporate partners, alumni and friends located in, or with strong connections to, the City of Cambridge. 
Grand Valley Society of Architects Annual Student Award

The award is open to students in their 3rd year of study during the 2023 Winter
semester enrolled at the following programs:

  • University of Waterloo School of Architecture
  • University of Waterloo Architectural Engineering
  • Conestoga College Architecture – Construction Engineering Technology
  • Conestoga College Architecture – Project and Facility Management

Submissions will be split into two (2) categories - one (1) category for University
applicants and one (1) category for College applicants - and will be judged on
the quality of the Submission Content and adherence to Technical Requirements

BDP Quadrangle Excellence in Digital Design and Fabrication

Two awards will be presented annually to full-time undergraduate students enrolled in any year in the School of Architecture. Selection will be based on a strong understanding of digital design tools and the fabrication process demonstrated through storytelling, aesthetic composition, technical skill, and ambition in the field. Students will be invited to apply through the School of Architecture during the Spring term (starting in Spring 2024).
A.M. Snider Family Award for Excellence An award, valued at up to $1,500, will be provided annually to a full-time undergraduate student enrolled in Year Four in the School of Architecture. Selection will be based on academic achievement (minimum 80% average in studio courses) combined with excellence in design. The School of Architecture will invite 4A students to submit a portfolio of their best design projects throughout their education by early May. This fund is made possible by a donation from A.M. Snider’s family.
Ledcor Group Upper-Year Scholarship Selection is based on academic achievement (minimum 80% cumulative average), interdisciplinary interest in Civil Engineering and Architecture, extracurricular involvement, and demonstration of leadership potential.
Lemay Change Maker Award Selection to be based on excellence in design and/or design initiative with distinctively actionable potential to positively impact Canadian communities with architecture that is thought-provoking, collaborative, and sustainable.
