Hairy-stemmed White Panicled Aster
Symphyotrichum lanceolatum (Willd.) Nesom var. hirsuticaule (Semple & Chmielewski) Nesom is native to in mucky soils in upland glacial deposits of southern Ontario, in the eastern and western Lake Superior areas at the northern limit of the deciduous forest, west to southeastern Manitoba, northern Illinois and Michigan (Brouillet et al. 2006; FNA). Plants tend to bloom slightly earlier than do those of other varieties in the area and often the stems are taller and more robust. The stems are moderately to densely hairy unlike other varieties in Sy. lanceolatum. The variety is tetraploid 2n=32.
