Heterotheca stenophylla

Heterotheca stenophylla (A. Gray) Shinners is native to the Great Plains of the U.S. The species is divided into two generally rather different looking varieties that differ in the density of hairs and glands on the leaves and upper stems.  However, many intermediates occur through the range.  Both varieties have similarly brittle lower stems.  Nesom (2020) raised var. angustifolia (Rydb.) Semple to species level as H. angustifolia (Rydb.) Nesom.  Nesom (2020) also split off from var. stenophylla his H. scabrifolia (A. Nels.) Nesom.
