Solidago yambaruensis S. Sakaguchi & Mot. Ito is a recently described very rare rheophyte endemic to Okinawa Island, Ryukyo Arch, in southern Japan.

Solidago yambaruensis range map JCS draft

The species was described by Sakaguchi et al. (2021) based on results of molecular and morphometric studies of the S. decurrens complex of species that includes the more widely distributed rheophytes S. yokusaiana along rivers in southern Japan and S. horieana endemic to a small location on Hokkaido Island in northern Japan. Solidago decurrens var. insularis also occurs on Okinawa Island but is not a rheophyte.  Several recent studies have done much to expand our understanding of the S. virgaurea complex s.l. across Eurasian in Japan (Sakaguchi et al. 2017, 2018, 2021; Kyan et al. 2021).
