Researchers at the University of Waterloo will work to strengthen health care for older Canadians living with frailty with a new $2.6-million grant from the Canadian Frailty Network.

The money will fund a project that will give primary health-care providers in Ontario, Quebec and Alberta access to efficient screening tools to quickly identify patients who may be at risk for frailty. It will also give health-care providers access to an online platform to initiate referrals and co-ordinate care with other providers.

At the May symposium held in Nanjing China, The International Society for Therapeutic Ultrasound (ISTU) has presented the Frederic Lizzi Early Career Award to Dr. Alfred Yu in recognition of his substantial contributions to the advancement of therapeutic ultrasound, specifically for his major research accomplishments on the biophysics of sonoporation and wave-cell interactions.

Dana Kulić and researchers at the University of Waterloo have combined motion sensors with software programs so that people recovering from hip and knee replacements could see how well they were doing their rehabilitative exercises.

Initial results show that the immediate visual feedback the new technology provides makes patients perform better during their physiotherapy appointments.

Alfred Yu has been awarded $493K from Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) for his Project Grant entitled "VAST-MAP: Vascular Stiffness Mapping for Aging Analysis Using High Frame Rate Ultrasound."

Distinguished Professor Emeritus Don Cowan along with colleague and research associate Kyle Young received the Award of Merit from the Volunteer Action Centre of Kitchener Waterloo and Area, for developing volunteer-matching software that is used locally, provincially and nationally.
