A new research centre at the University of Waterloo that will revolutionize the ability to predict and delay illness and injury associated with aging is receiving $1.3 million toward wireless wearables and other devices and technology. More than $4 million was awarded to four Waterloo teams including CBB member Bill McIlroy from Kinesiology: Advanced Aging ResearCH Centre (ARCH) to transform health and well-being of older adults.

Research2Reality is a new social media and television campaign by six of Canada’s top research institutions including the University of Waterloo that aims to bring high-impact university research to millions of Canadians.

Edith Law was awarded a CIHR-NSERC Collaborative Health Research Project (CHRP) program grant of $145,000 per year for three years.

The University of Waterloo’s Propel Centre for Population Health Impact has announced the recipients of the Fall 2014 Chronic Disease Prevention Initiative Seed Fund competition. Some CBB members are listed as contributing researchers in the winning projects.

CBB member Omar Ramahi and Electrical and Computer Engineer recently published in the journal Applied Physics Letters on clean alternatives such as harvesting energy from electromagnetic waves that may help ease the world’s energy shortage. [Engineering News]

Professor Catherine Burns has been reappointed to a three-year term as Director of the Centre of Bioengineering and Biotechnology (CBB), according to an announcement by the Dean of Engineering, Pearl Sullivan and Dean of Science, Terry McMahon.

CBB members Slim Boumaiza (Electrical and Computer Engineering) and Niels Bols (Biology) are two of eleven Waterloo researchers campus-wide to receive $5.3 million in funding from the Natural Research Council of Canada (NSERC) to work with industry on strategic research.

CBB member Trevor Charles, a professor of Biology in the Faculty of Science, received a Spark Award from the Ontario Genomics Institute (OGI) for his highly innovative project in the area of bioplastics.

CBB member Scott Taylor along with his coworkers have develop a new method to improve the discovery of antibiotics. The new method is published in the journal Organic Letters.
