Southern Ontario Microscale Medical Robots Symposium

On Tuesday, July 11, the University of Waterloo hosted SOMMeRS 2023: Southern Ontario Microscale Medical Robots Symposium in celebration of 20 years of research.

The event honoured medical microrobotics pioneer, Dr. Joseph Wang, Distinguished Professor, Department of Nanoengineering at the University of California San Diego. Dr. Wang delivered a plenary talk and received a career achievement award for his contributions to the field.

Keynote and invited speakers highlighted the research of the growing multidisciplinary field that combines disciplines of science, engineering, and medicine that to revolutionize medical interventions. Talks spanned cancer detection and treatment, novel materials and power sources, and new methods for non-invasive surgery.

SOMMeRS was organized by Veronika Magdanz, Assistant Professor, Systems Design Engineering and Hamed Shahsavan, Assistant Professor, Chemical Engineering.
