Chem 13 News magazine is running a contest to design tiles for the four newly named elements, nihonium (Nh), moscovium (Mc), tennessine (Ts) and oganesson (Og). The deadline for contest submissions has been extended to March 31, 2017. See the new elements contest page for more details.

University of Waterloo Neodymium-60 Anniversary Project

Neodymium-60 elemental tile with University of Waterloo logos and datesWe are inviting everyone with a connection to the University of Waterloo to design a square tile that showcases the University of Waterloo and includes the symbol Nd-60 for the university’s neodymium (atomic number 60) anniversary. We will create a mosaic of science and art for a public display on campus. The deadline is July 1, 2017. See the Neodymium-60 Anniversary Project webpage for more details.

  2. Feb. 22, 2017Study says drugs could be developed cheaper and fasterIllustration of how DMS can identify the best isomer of quinoline that will pass through a cell wall.

Chemists at the University of Waterloo, SCIEX and Pfizer have discovered a new way to help the pharmaceutical industry identify and test new drugs, which could revolutionize drug development, and substantially reduce the cost and time drugs need to reach their market.

  3. Feb. 20, 2017Chemistry competes in Science's 3MT heat3MTPhoto

The annual Faculty of Science Three Minute Thesis heat returned this week.  More than twenty graduate students from all six units gathered to compete and describe their research in less than three minutes, using only one slide.
