WICI affiliate researcher Madhur Anand‘s debut poetry collection, A New Index for Predicting Catastrophes, examines the intersection between art and science, mixing “the beauty of her perceived world” with “the scintillant language of scientific evidence” in poems that “interrogate crises of personal and global concern.”

You are invited to submit an abstract and/or participate at the 2015 Summer Solstice International Conference on Discrete Models of Complex Systems.

Agent-based models (ABMs) are simulation models that have been used to study complex systems in a wide range of academic fields including biology, computer science, environmental science, economics, geography, planning, and sociology among others.

The Economics for the Anthropocene project is seeking nine PhD or master's students to join their international research initiative in fall 2015. This is not only for students of economics  — they are seeking to build a multidisciplinary co-hort. Application deadlines are in February 2015.

In conjunction with John McLevey’s talk, WICI is hosting its first challenge of the 2014-2015 year.

Each year WICI hosts a Speakers Series that brings distinguished guests to University of Waterloo to present on topics of their choice relevant to complexity science. The series also offers local scholars and WICI members an opportunity to share their work with the university’s faculty and students, and the local community.

This year’s WICI Speaker Series will feature talks by Sander van der Leeuw, Jack Goldstone, Hans De Sterck, John McLevely, and Derek Robinson, as well as a Bridges Lecture being delivered by WICI member Sarah Tolmie and WICI director Dawn Parker.

WICI is hiring an information technician to support the WICI website, advance WICI’s suite of software and hardware tools, and provide general technical support.

SSHRC funding has been granted to new research projects involving WICI core members Dawn Parker and Steven Quilley.

Parker, WICI director and professor with University of Waterloo's School of Planning, will be working with Jeff Casello and Markus Moos to examine the pending development of light rail transit in Kitchener-Waterloo, and its affect on core-area intensification and socio-economic change.
