Award description:
With the support of the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities (MTCU), a Scholar Awards Program in Autism was established to ensure that Ontario attracts and retains pre-eminent scholars studying autism.  The community of autism scholars fostered by this Awards Program will excel, according to internationally accepted standards of scientific excellence, in the creation of new knowledge concerning child autism, and its translation into improved health for children, more effective services and products for children with autism, and increase the province’s capacity in diagnosis and assessment of autism and a strengthened treatment system.

Value description:

  • $18,000 for master's students
  • $20,000 for doctoral students

Application package:
Applicants must email the following application materials to GSPA (gspa-awards@uwaterloo.ca) by December 1: 

  1. Include in body of email: Full name, Waterloo ID
  2. Application: available at https://cou.ca/resources/awards
    • Prior to submission, applicants must select “PRINT FORM” located at the top right of page 1 and save a copy. This action ensures that all form field entries are securely recorded.
    • The field labeled “Signature of Dean of Graduate School” must remain blank at the time of submission. This section is reserved for institutional-level authorization if the application is selected for nomination.
    • The supervisor's signature, if applicable, should be obtained prior to submission. If a proposed PhD supervisor has already been identified, that individual should sign. If a supervisor has not yet been determined, this section may be left blank.
  3. Curriculum vitae: including information concerning the eligibility criteria
  4. Statement of research: explaining the research to be undertaken during the period of graduate study (maximum 1,000 words). Must be written by the candidate.*
  5. Non-technical summary (maximum 500 words). Must be written by the candidate.*

*one additional page may be included for citations/diagrams.

Transcripts:

  • Upon receipt of a complete application, GSPA will automatically generate an official UW transcript and retrieve copies of official non-Waterloo transcripts which were submitted as part of the applicant’s admission application.

Reference Letters:

  • Two reference letters are required.
  • Applicants must ensure that their referees email their letters directly to GSPA (gspa-awards@uwaterloo.ca) by December 1. All letters must be signed and on letterhead. 
  • Letters should focus on an evaluation of the applicant’s research to date, and the research being undertaken during the period of graduate study for which the applicant will hold an Autism Scholars Award, if successful.
