Award description:
A scholarship, valued at $1,500, will be awarded annually to a graduate student registered full-time in a master's program in the Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering in the Faculty of Engineering who persevered to return to school after a period of time away (e.g. five years) from academics. Interested students should submit an application by October 1 to the Graduate Funding Coordinator in the Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering. Selection will be based on academic excellence (minimum 80% cumulative average or equivalent in current or previously attended postsecondary program) combined with a personal statement describing their experience and perseverance to return to full-time studies. This fund is made possible by a donation from Ruth A. Sprenger in honour of her husband, C.J. Dick Sprenger who began his university studies as a mature student and went on to graduate from the University of Waterloo in 1969 with a MA Sc. in Management Sciences.

Eligibility & selection criteria: 

  • Full-time graduate students (Canadian citizens or permanent residents) registered in the master's program (research or course-based) in the Electrical & Computer Engineering Department in the Faculty of Engineering who persevered to return to school after a period of time away (e.g., five years) from academics.
  • Selection to be based on academic excellence (minimum 80% cumulative average or equivalent in current or previously attended postsecondary program) combined with a personal statement describing their experience and perseverance to return to full-time studies.
  • If an eligible candidate from the Electrical & Computer Engineering department cannot be found in a particular year, the award will be carried forward to the next award year.
  • Award is in addition to the minimum guaranteed funding and can be held in conjunction with other major awards.
  • Application is required by October 1 and must be submitted to the Graduate Funding Coordinator in the Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering.
  • The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering will select recipients normally each Fall.
