This award was created to celebrate David Johnston’s pivotal contributions to Institute for Quantum Computing (IQC) at University of Waterloo, his passion for leadership and his enthusiasm for continuous learning, innovation and achievement. David Johnston was President at the University of Waterloo from 1999 to 2010. For more information on the award please visit the IQC website.

Value description:
Up to three awards valued at $2,500 will be given annually to current graduate students at the IQC at the University of Waterloo.

Eligibility & selection criteria: 

  • Full-time current graduate students at the IQC at the University of Waterloo.
  • Selection to be based on an illustrated outstanding commitment to scientific outreach and community engagement through volunteerism.
  • Selection will recognize students who are dedicated to promoting public awareness of quantum information research, general science and IQC in industry or the scientific and local communities.
  • Selection will celebrate students who have engaged the community to provide educational experiences that embody a culture of continuous learning and promote interest in scientific research.
  • This Award is intended to be in addition to any Research or Teaching Assistantship support from the department or a supervising Faculty Member.
  • This Award can be held simultaneously with other graduate awards (subject to the requirements of other scholarships/awards).

The award will be administered in accordance with University of Waterloo policies and practices (and the external scholarship programs as applicable) as amended from time to time.
