Abstract:

Energy management within smart residential homes is a long-standing challenge that involves effective scheduling of electric vehicle charging and discharging while utilizing available photovoltaic resources, efficiently drawing power from the electric grid, and meeting household energy demands. This research proposes a real-time energy management controller (RT-EMC) from the perspective of an electric utility that aims to achieve several objectives. These include minimizing electricity costs for both the utility and customers, promoting reliable power grid operation, and mitigating distribution transformer overloading. Further, to achieve the above goals, three subsets are integrated into the proposed RT-EMC framework: kVA load estimation of the distribution transformer (DT) using smart meter data, a systematic framework to assess real-time and anticipated aging of a DT, and behind-the-meter PV generation disaggregation from smart meter data. The effectiveness of the proposed RT-EMC and its subsets is evaluated on true datasets. The findings indicate that the proposed approach offers significant benefits to all stakeholders.
