The IDEAs Clinic Design Kickstart Summer Program is a four‑day, hands‑on experience designed to give incoming engineering students a strong head start before their first term begins. Through a fast‑paced design challenge, students gain early exposure to the engineering design cycle—problem framing, ideation, prototyping, testing, and iteration—while learning how to effectively and ethically use AI as a design and analysis tool. By working in teams and building real prototypes, students develop practical technical skills, confidence, and familiarity with the tools and workflows they will encounter in their first‑year courses.
For students, the benefits are immediate and long‑lasting. Participants enter the fall term better prepared, with resume‑ready technical and employability skills, experience working in teams, and a clearer understanding of what it means to think and work like an engineer. The program also helps students build peer networks and connect with upper‑year mentors before arriving on campus, strengthening their sense of belonging and confidence. This early engineering “kickstart” supports a smoother transition to university, improves academic readiness, and helps students begin their engineering journey feeling capable, connected, and motivated.
