SERS Award Winners

With the end of the winter term and school year, recipients of special awards were announced. Sharah Gallego Meneses was awarded the academic excellence award among graduating undergraduate SERS students. Ishani Dasgupta and Kyle Schang were awarded the SERS Good Citizen Awards at the undergraduate and graduate levels respectively.

In August 2022, a group of 12 students and two instructors took part in a new SERS field course titled The Ocean, Human Impacts and Sustainability. This course moved quickly through an overview of the ocean, explored human activities and impacts, particularly in the coastal zone, and then looked at some of the brilliant work that is going on to make our activities more sustainable.

A special offering ERS graduate field school course is taking place August 12-19, 2023 in Chilika, India. ERS 675/ INDEV 617 is the code for the Field School course Blue Justice and Coastal Livelihoods to Transition from Vulnerability to Viability. University of Waterloo students receive course credits for their successful completion of the Field School course. All on-site Field School costs for registered UWaterloo students are covered.

In December 2022 SERS 4th year student Emma Kirke attended the 15th meeting of the COP to the UN Convention on Biological Diversity as a youth delegate.  Emma reflects on her experience at the COP, her opinion on the outcome and appreciation for the freedoms afforded Canadian activists.
