The world today needs more of what Waterloo's Environment Faculty has to offer. I say this not to boast or encourage any mutual back-patting, but rather as a sincere call to action to the students, alumni, researchers, professors and staff who are part of this community. Let’s dream about what we can become. And then let’s bring that dream to life.

The University of Waterloo’s compass is pointing it in a clear direction — the future. As you read this, its Futures Framework is working hard to shape the forces that will define the 21st century. These are big, bold goals that demand a long, ambitious journey. And appropriately, Waterloo’s Environment Faculty is helping chart the way forward in this journey with new programs and research that will encourage innovative, creative thinking about the future, with a lens on cities in Canada and around the world.

The University of Waterloo has long been famed as an engine of new, innovative technologies that are transforming how humans live in every way. But it deserves to be better known for its vital role in shaping a future that is also sustainable in every way — environmentally, economically and socially. The Faculty of Environment has emerged as a vibrant hub for research that is training the talent to do this. Olaf Weber has seen the future — and it is sustainable.
