Charting a course for a sustainable future
The concept of sustainability is the definition of complexity, so working with government, industries, and communities to move towards more sustainable ways of living and working requires unconventional thinking and leading-edge researchers. Because our researchers integrate multiple approaches and partner with the people who use our research, we are able to unravel the meaning of sustainability in specific contexts and collaborate on effective transition pathways to greater sustainability.

What we do here makes a difference out there
We partner with government, industry and communities not only to envision a more sustainable future, but also plan feasible ways to achieve that future. For example, we know that critical minerals are essential to technological progress, which is essential to economic development. Extracting those minerals, however, can create significant issues for local and Indigenous communities and the environment. Mitigating those concerns does not have to entail endless delays and roadblocks, but it does require relevant, leading-edge research informed by community engagement and a deep understanding of sustainability for the context and activity to guide better decision-making. This is what Environment researchers do.
2025 TD Walter Bean Professor: Sir Andrew Steer
As former President & CEO of the Bezos Earth Fund and a longtime global advisor on climate and development, Dr. Steer brings deep insight into how transformative solutions take root—across governments, industries, and communities. At a moment when the need for bold, coordinated action has never been clearer, he will explore what it takes to drive real progress for cities, ecosystems, and future generations. From resilient cities to restored ecosystems, Sir. Steer will explore what strategies have worked and what hasn’t, how transformative solutions can be scaled—and how leadership across sectors is key.
