The FAUW Equity Committee is currently seeking nominations for the 2023 Equity & Inclusivity Award.

Inaugurated in 2012, the Equity & Inclusivity Award recognizes a member, group, or affiliate of the University of Waterloo community. The award is meant to further support individuals or groups who have demonstrated an exemplary commitment to improving equity, inclusivity, and/or diversity at the University of Waterloo.

As you can see, we have a new website! We've moved into the latest version of the Waterloo Content Management System and taken the opportunity to move things around in a way that we hope works better for members. Some of the changes include:

• A 'timeline of achievements' that captures many of the highlights of our work over the last few years.
• The Policy Development section, which now has background and updates on all Class-F policies in progress.
• How FAUW works: This page explains the functions of each of the key roles and bodies within FAUW.
• Updates to the Faculty Guide to Working with Waterloo.
• A breakdown of where your dues go.
• And more!

As of January 16, 2023, FAUW and the administration have completed the first two steps of our “path forward” for policies 76 (Faculty Appointments) and 77 (Tenure and Promotion of Faculty Members)—exchanging policy drafts and four meetings of a policy drafting committee —and are beginning mediation (step three).

David Porreca has been elected FAUW president for 2023-2025. FAUW thanks both candidates, David Porreca and Vershawn Young, for running in the first contested election for FAUW president in many years! And thank you to the 58% of FAUW members who voted in the election. David's term starts July 1, 2023.

The Ontario government introduced legislation this week (Bill 28) that will force a contract on CUPE’s 55,000 education workers in the Ontario School Board Council of Unions (OSBCU) and prevent a legal strike that was to start Friday. These workers earn $39,000 per year on average, and 51 per cent of them work another job to make ends meet. They are calling on the Ford government to hire more education workers to support all students, and to increase their wages, as they are the lowest-paid employees in the sector.

Nominations are now open for the role of FAUW President, for the term July 1, 2023, to June 30, 2025. The FAUW president leads and oversees the association's operations as well as representing the association at the University and in the broader community. Learn more about the role of the FAUW President and the upcoming election. Nominations are due at noon on November 18, and voting will run from November 22 through December 5.

As most of you know, FAUW has been attempting for a number of years to negotiate revisions to the University's policies on Faculty Appointments (Policy 76) and Tenure and Promotion of Faculty Members (Policy 77). If you haven’t been keeping up with the developments, this is your chance to catch up.

FAUW will have very limited staff resources this summer and we may take a week or longer to respond to emails and calls. We appreciate your patience, and we hope you, too, are able to take some time off this summer!

The award has recently shifted to emphasize supporting continued equity work, rather than providing a reward for past work.
