Menatalla Ellag, Master’s in Systems Design Engineering

As a Visiting Graduate Student at the Wyss Institute at Harvard University, Menatalla Ellag is pursuing a MASc in Biomedical Engineering. Driven by her passion for the intersection of medicine and engineering, she chose to join the Wyss Institute and work under the guidance of Dr. Donald Ingber and Dr. Mike Super on the Sugar-to-Fiber project, which is part of a collaboration with Kraft-Heinz.

Magdalena Kaczmarczyk, master's in Architecture

As a recipient of the Graduate Studies International Experience Award, Magdalena (she/her) was given the opportunity to travel to Rome, Italy, during her Master’s of Architecture degree. Thanks to the scholarship, she was able to join the current undergraduate cohort as part of the Rome program, an otherwise integral experience that was lost during her undergrad degree due to Covid-19. In addition to this foundational experience, Magdalena was able to further develop her thesis and engage with her research material in a personal way.

Amy Tai, MASc student in Systems Design Engineering

Amy will be travelling to Paris, France to expand her knowledge and skills in the field of Natural Language Processing (NLP) for clinical data in the medical space and engage with researchers from diverse backgrounds. NLP has emerged as a powerful tool in the medical field, enabling the extraction of valuable insights from vast amounts of clinical data, and Amy is eager to deepen her knowledge and contribute to the evolving field and make a meaningful impact on patient care.

Chinazom Uwaoma - Conrad School of Entrepreneurship

Chinazom Uwaoma

Within just a year of starting the Master of Business, Entrepreneurship and Technology (MBET) program, Chinazom Uwaoma had already founded two promising startups, both aimed at driving social impact in Canada and around the world.

Sophie Hillcoat, master's student in Mechanical Engineering

In her three-month research visit at the German Aerospace Center (DLR) in Gottingen, Germany, Sophie is investigating the use of pore-network models to represent porous materials used in the development of thermal protection systems. She will be exposed to realistic materials used in the implementation of such systems which will enhance the value and applicability of Sophie’s own research at the University of Waterloo.

Justin Kyung Park, master's in Architecture

Justin has travelled to Italy as part of the Rome Program offered to Undergraduate Architecture students. This opportunity was not available during the Covid-19 Pandemic for Justin, so he is now enrolled during his graduate years to fill the gap in his studies. This experience has expanded his horizons through on site lectures and curated trips to small towns and major architectural destinations, and inspired his thesis research which looks at visualizing historical narratives and prospective futures of the built environment through augmented reality.

Simon Liao, MArch student in the School of Architecture

Simon (he/him) worked as an Intern Architect at Paul de Ruiter Architects in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. During his co-op term abroad, he had worked on a wide range of building types including educational, institutional and commercial projects , and was involved in the design process that aims to achieve high level of sustainability. The experience provided Simon fresh perspective on European architectural practice and green standards compared with its North American counterpart.

Qiaoyun Chen, PhD student in Mechanical and Mechatronics Engineering

Qiaoyun is participating in the 2+2 PhD program at the University of Waterloo and Soochow University in China. She will complete planned projects and experience different educational methods in a different culture. Qiaoyun will further improve her problem-solving ability and communication skills.

Nina Wang, MArch student in the School of Architecture

Nina visited the sacred island of Miyajima, Japan to investigate the free-roaming Sika deer, in order to question the idea of urban citizenship. In the context of rapid urban development and mass tourism, this field work will help her to redefine the 'city', and design for interspecies territories inclusive of all those who exist (and have historically existed) alongside us.
