The Mike & Ophelia Lazaridis Quantum Nano Centre (QNC) was designed and constructed specifically to accommodate the Institute for Quantum Computing (IQC) and the Waterloo Institute for Nanotechnology (WIN) and to support the research and outreach activities of these groups. This page outlines the procedures and information required to reserve rooms managed by IQC.
Booking priorities
IQC meeting rooms and seminar rooms are used for the following activities in descending order of priority:
- IQC classes (classes will not be moved for events)
- Research activities within IQC
- Outreach activities of IQC
- Administrative functions of IQC
- IQC organized/sponsored events
- Other University of Waterloo departments/organizations for meetings, guest lectures, workshops
- External events
Available spaces
Seminar room
IQC has a multi-purpose seminar room that can be divided into two spaces or used as one large room. A coat room is available, but please note it is unsecure and tickets are not provided for coat check. The lobby is available for registration only.
Full seminar room (QNC 0101 and 1102/1103)
- Seats 220 theatre style – total 140 currently available
- Includes podium, screen, whiteboard, projector, speakers and one handheld or lapel microphone
- Technician is required (see costs below)
QNC 0101
- Seats 140 (capacity of 162 without the seating)
- Includes podium, screen, whiteboard, projector, speakers and one handheld or lapel microphone
- Technician is required (see costs below)
QNC 1102/1103 – Currently not available
- Seats 80 (capacity of 74 without the seating)
- Includes podium and whiteboard; speakers are not needed in this space
- We do not include laptops for projection, tables, moveable chairs, extra microphones, or a stage/platform

Room use policies/procedures
- IQC rooms may be available for use by University of Waterloo faculty or staff on a first-come, first-served basis. Security, monitoring staff, AV and clean-up charges may apply. IQC rooms are generally not available for bookings on weekends.
- University of Waterloo faculty and staff bookings in the seminar room may require additional staff to support Audiovisual (AV), Information Technology (IT) or other requirements. Any additional costs will be charged back to the appropriate department.
Booking guidelines
- Priority will be given to IQC-related events/meetings.
- Event bookings will typically take place within the same term as the event.
- Event representatives are responsible for leaving room(s) in a pre-arranged order and condition (layout, cleanliness, etc.).
- Chairs or tables may not be moved from one room to another.
- Event representatives are responsible for arranging any event audio-visual requirements, technical assistance with audio-visual equipment or computers for use with PowerPoint (or similar) presentations.
- Events may not normally be booked on weekends.
- Exceptions to weekend bookings will require arrangements to be made by IQC staff to employ adequate security and/or attendants. Any event permitted on a weekend will require an agreement to pay an administrative fee, attendants’ time, and any cleaning expenses (including used space, hallways and washroom facilities).
- Damage to equipment or facilities and spills on floors or carpets must be reported promptly to IQC attendants.
- Events that take place weekdays after business hours will be required to cover the cost of additional security/staff time.
- IQC retains the right to refuse bookings of events that may disrupt, disturb, or interfere with day- to-day activities.
- All University safety and local fire regulations must be adhered to by all users of IQC facilities.
- All users of IQC facilities must adhere to the uWaterloo's Policy 15 on the use of space on campus.
- All users of IQC facilities must adhere to the uWaterloo's Policy 21 on the use of alcoholic beverages on campus.
