Faculty, Research Assistant Professors (RAPs), graduate students and associates of the Institute for Quantum Computing (IQC) collected 14 awards from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Council of Canada (NSERC) today.

Kyung Choi
Kyung Soo Choi, an IQC researcher in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Waterloo received both a Discovery grant and an equipment grant – he also recently received an Early Researcher Award. Choi’s work focuses on quantum nonlinear optics and works with ultracold Rydberg atoms.

IQC award recipients include:

  • Thomas Jennewein, a faculty member in the Department of Physics and Astronomy, received a Discovery grant for his work developing quantum photonics devices for quantum communications.
  • Michal Bajcsy, received a Discovery grant for his research studying on-chip platforms for engineering photon-photon interactions and low-power photonic devices. Bajcsy is a faculty member in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering.
  • Adrian Lupascu, a faculty member in the physics and astronomy department, received a grant to purchase equipment for fast turnaround experiments with quantum devices in a dilution refrigerator
  • RAP Vadim Makarov of the Department of Physics and Astronomy also received an equipment grant to purchase a high-speed oscilloscope for next-generation quantum information processing and communication
  • Eduardo Martin-Martinez, a RAP in the applied mathematics department received a Discovery grant for his quantum information and technologies research
  • PhD students Michael Mazurek (Physics and Astronomy) and Chunhao Wang (Computer Science) each received an award
  • Master’s students Olivia Di Matteo (Physics and Astronomy), Sean Walker (Chemistry) and Jean Philippe MacLean (Physics and Astronomy) each received an award
  • IQC Associates, both from the Department of Physics and Astronomy, Robert Mann and Jan Kycia were also awarded Discovery grants.
