Sevag Gharibian receives prestigious award

Congratulations to former Institute for Quantum Computing (IQC) PhD student Sevag Gharibian who has been awarded the NSERC Banting Postdoctoral Fellowship based on his PhD research in approximation algorithms for quantum problems. 

Gharibian completed his Masters of Mathematics and PhD in computer science at the University of Waterloo under the supervision of IQC faculty member Richard Cleve. The fellowship will support his postdoctoral research at the University of California at Berkeley, in electrical engineering & computer sciences, computer science division.

The Banting Postdoctoral Fellowship, valued at $70,000 per year over two years, is granted annually to 70 exceptional applicants, “both nationally and internationally, who will positively contribute to the country’s economic, social and research-based growth” across three granting agencies. Gharibian was one of 23 successful applicants in the natural sciences and engineering field to receive this top Canadian fellowship.
