New IQC faculty member Prof. Robert Koenig explores fundamental questions of quantum error correction and cryptography — and plays the classical guitar too.
Koenig, whose research focuses on important questions of quantum processing and error correction, joins IQC following postdoctoral fellowships at the IBM Watson Research Center and the California Institute of Technology.
Koenig says he was drawn to Waterloo by “IQC’s extraordinary amount of research activity” and the friendly, collegial atmosphere.
“I believe this an excellent place to broaden one’s knowledge of quantum computing, learn about the recent developments and bounce ideas off others,” says Koenig. “It’s an outstanding environment to pursue and enjoy collaborative work.”
Koenig is a member of the University of Waterloo’s Department of Applied Mathematics, and he aims to develop new quantum error-correcting codes, as well as new cryptographic schemes based on information processing limitations.
Away from his research, Koenig is a classical guitarist and outdoorsman who is looking forward to exploring his new environs in Ontario.
IQC is proud to add another exceptional researcher to its world-leading faculty. Welcome, Robert!
