Congratulations to IQC faculty member Joseph Emerson, who has been honoured among Waterloo Region's "40 Under 40" — an annual award that recognizes remarkable people making a difference in the community.

Emerson, who joined IQC in 2005 and specializes in the theory of quantum information, was recognized for his contributions to Waterloo Region's scientific landscape through his outreach work.

Emerson believes in the civic responsibility of scientists to share their work with the public, which led to his invaluable work as head writer, scientific advisor and co-star of the award-winning documentary, The Quantum Tamers.

"I want to convey how fun and interesting this science is, how much passion these scientists have for their work, and how relevant that work is to the real world," Emerson said.

Emerson has been an invited lecturer at research institutes in Canada, the United States, France, Germany and elsewhere.

Emerson says he is honoured to be recognized among the "40 Under 40" in Waterloo Region — a community he is happy to call home.

"We've put down roots here and we love it," says Emerson, a married father of two young girls.
