The Quantum Tamers to be screened in Ottawa

Wednesday, April 7, 2010

IQC Director Raymond Laflamme will host a special screening of the award-winning documentary The Quantum Tamers in Ottawa on April 28. The screening, part of an alumni reception for University of Waterloo and Carleton graduates, will be followed by a Q&A session with Laflamme, who was a scientific advisor and co-star of the film.

Produced by Waterloo's Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics, the documentary uses dramatization and cutting-edge animation to chronicle the rise of quantum mechanics and its importance to the future of information processing and communications.

Shortly after its release last year, the film won the Prix Audace (or Audacity Prize) at the Pariscience Film Festival, for originality in subject matter and treatment. The April 28 screening will be held at Carleton University's Minto Centre (1125 Colonel By Drive) from 6pm to 8pm, with a complimentary reception to follow.

Founded in 2002, the mission of the Institute for Quantum Computing (IQC) is to aggressively explore and advance the application of quantum mechanical systems to a vast array of relevant information processing techniques.

A part of the University of Waterloo, Waterloo, Ont., Canada, IQC creates a truly unique environment fostering cutting-edge research and collaboration between researchers in the areas of computer, engineering, mathematical and physical sciences.

At the time of this release, IQC has 17 faculty members, 22 postdoctoral fellows and over 55 students and research assistants, as well as a support staff of 18.
