KI Alumni Panel

Each year in one of the winter term KI Seminars, we invite a panel of KI alumni to share their experiences. It's really valuable for the KI community to learn what a diverse range of career paths possible with a BKI, and to build their KI network.

2023 panel

  • Cayley MacArthur (BKI’13), did a joint Masters in English and Systems Design Engineering, and a PhD in Systems Design Engineering. She is an Assistant Professor, Interaction Design and User Experience Research, Stratford School of Interaction Design and Business. Cayley specializes in human-computer interaction (HCI) research, with a focus on inclusive technologies and inclusion in technology, and is an active member of the Games Institute at Waterloo.

  • Cynthia Zhou (BKI’14), graduated from KI with a joint honours in mathematics then continued to obtain a MMath in Statistics from Waterloo the following year. After a brief stint as a Statistician at Statistics Canada, Cynthia discovered the excitement of confronting the kinds of interdisciplinary challenges prevalent in Data Science and has remained as a Data Scientist ever since. As a Lead Data Scientist at Medical Solutions Inc, Cynthia now tackles problems related to medical staffing such as supply and demand forecasting, job matching, and recommending fair market value for nurses.
  • Matthew Gerrits (BKI’21), graduated from KI with a joint honours in political science and minors in public policy and economics. After spending a two year stint of his undergraduate degree as an elected student leader at Waterloo, Matthew was inspired to go into the University of Waterloo Master of Public Service Program, where he served in co-op at Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, and is currently in his final term.
  • Dinesh Moro (BKI’21), graduated from KI with a minor in kinesiology and aspirations to become a physiotherapist. After taking a year away from academics, he decided to follow his curiosity in public health instead (originally sparked by his senior research project). Now, Dinesh is thoroughly enjoying his studies as a first-year student in the University of Toronto's Masters in Social and Behavioural Health Sciences program. 

2022 panel

  • David Collins (BKI’14) worked as a consultant at Deloitte, did a Master’s in History and Philosophy of Science and Technology, and is Managing Partner of the Red Beans Group, an innovation consulting service focused on ideating and inventing beautiful physical, mental, and digital spaces.
  • Samantha Afonso (BKI’17) did a Master’s in Genetic Counselling, and is the Clinical Genetic Counsellor for the Heart, Lung and Vascular Program at St. Michael’s Hospital, Unity Health Toronto. She counsels patients for a variety of genetic conditions, and works with physicians, administration and executives to develop the medical genetics program and patient supports.
  • Dana Lobo (BKI’17) worked with BMO in various roles (including summer internships during university), and is now working with Acheivers, an HR tech company.
  • Will Turman (BKI’18) did a Master’s in Planning, now working as a Planner, and doing lots of engaged citizen activities.

2021 panel

  • Shane Morganstein (BKI'16) recently completed the joint JD/MBA program at Osgoode Hall Law School and the Schulich School of Business at York University. He is currently articling (legal apprenticeship) with a large downtown Toronto law firm, where he is specializing in banking and investment law.
  • Jamie Vinken (BKI'16) is in her third year of medical school at McMaster and also completed a Master’s degree in Political Science at Waterloo and has been a medic in the Canadian Forces Reserves.
  • Mitchell Loewen (BKI'17) is Co-Founder and Designer at Cloudfall Interactive Studios, a small independent game studio creating both digital and tabletop games, and recently graduated from the MA in Game Design program at American University.
  • Betelhem (Betty) Alemayehu (BKI'19) is working as a Catalyst Development Program Associate at Scotiabank, as an analyst within the Global Operations rotational program, designed to be the “catalyst” of your career.

2020 panel

  • Mary Krupicz (BKI'12) is a Speech Language Pathologist at Speech Pathways.
  • Patrick Famaran (BKI'16) is Assistant Manager, Youth Social Impact & Corporate Citizenship at RBC.
  • Logan Miller (BKI'18) is completing a Masters of Arts in Global Governance at the Balsillie School of International Affairs.
  • Maytal Perlman (BKI'19) is pursuing a Masters of Health Science in the Translational Research Program at the University of Toronto.

  • Caroline Dunton (BKI'13) - completing a PhD in International Relations at The George Washington University and is currently the Cadieux Léger Fellow at Global Affairs Canada

  • Sarah Pearce (BKI'16) - completing an MASc in Systems Design Engineering at the University of Waterloo developing brain-computer interfaces for populations with special needs and doing software development in that area at Cognixion
