Library Week: copyright support

Thursday, October 20, 2022

With the speed at which content is created these days, there can be confusion about the rules for using something created by someone else. Grabbing a meme you saw on someone’s Instagram to reshare on your personal account is one thing; using it in an academic setting is another. The Library has experts that can you navigate complicated copyright rules.

copyright support Lauren BylLauren Byl, copyright and licensing librarian, shares more about how this service supports the campus community.

Who is the primary user of this service?

Anyone on campus with a copyright question! We answer questions from faculty, students and staff. Most of our questions come from folks who are wondering what they can use when they are teaching.

How does this service help library users?

We help users make copyright decisions with confidence, everything from figuring out what content they can use in their classes to what their rights are in the publishing process.

What is your number one tip to users to get the most out of this service?

I actually have two tips!

  1. The central source of campus copyright information is the Copyright @ Waterloo website.
  2. You can email copyright@uwaterloo.ca for guidance on your copyright question.
