The idea for lockers came from students, during two days of interviews that focused on understanding how students work when in the library. The 73 students that were interviewed commented on the difficulties of coming to campus for the day, from a distance, and needing a place to store materials between classes and other activities. The lockers also provide students who are working in the library with secure storage for laptops when a short trip is needed, such as a visit to the coffee shop on the main floor.
Since the lockers are only intended for day-use, they will unlock automatically after 8 straight hours of use.
Other things to note:
- Lockers that are not empty by building closing time
- will be emptied by staff, and
- will have items removed to the Lost & Found — a public area on the main floor.
- The Library will not be held responsible when a locker opens after 8 hours or when items are removed at closing time.
Tips for using the lockers:
- Lockers that are in use have a red flashing light.
- Make sure no one is watching when you enter your 4-digit code.
- If you forget the code ask at the circulation desk — you must have photo ID.
- If pinpads are not accessible you can sign out a special key from the circulation desk.
These lockers were added as part of the 6th floor renovation, which was made possible through a generous donation by Elise Devitt in memory of her husband James Devitt.
