New plants perk up the libraries

Wednesday, May 13, 2015

The Dana Porter and Davis Centre libraries are looking more cheerful and spring-like this term, thanks to a handful of new plants that have arrived in both locations.

These are two of the new plants visitors will find in the Dana Porter Library.

The new plants are made possible by a partnership between the Federation of Student's Sustainable Campus Initiative (SCI), Plant Operations, and the Library’s Health, Safety, and Wellness (HSW) Committee. SCI funded the plants, Plant Operations advised on which plants were most appropriate for the different library environments, and the Library’s HSW Committee provided input on the planters and plant locations.

The Davis Centre Library gets less natural light, but there are still a few bright spots for plants near the back of the Library.

As a Feds initiative, student volunteers will help to maintain the plants throughout the year, aided by designated “Plant Champions” (library employees with a fondness for plants).

By adding more plants to the Library’s locations, the Library, SCI, and Plant Operations hope to enliven the Library’s spaces for students, making them more enjoyable and inspiring places to visit and study.
