The Library is pleased to announce four dynamic projects have been selected to receive a 2024-25 Staebler Insurance OER Fellow grant this year:
OER Implementation and Evaluation for Universal Design in Learning in Recreation and Leisure Studies (submitted by Dr. Brendan Riggin, lecturer, Department of Recreation and Leisure Studies) This project will develop a multimodal learning module, with a library of resources including videos, voice-over PowerPoints and case study examples, to ensure alignment with the objectives of Universal Design for Learning and the AODA.
FR 473: Towards a Theory of Cultural and Linguistic Minorization, Examples from French Speaking Communities in Canada (submitted by Dr. Elise Lepage, professor, Department of French Studies) This project will expand Lepage’s existing open textbook, Penser la minorisation culturelle et linguistique, started in 2021 to cover communities in Western Canada and address the evolving realities of linguistic minorities.
Sociology 101 eCampusOntario Textbook Update – Introduction to Sociology (submitted by Dr. Janice Aurini, professor, Department of Sociology and Legal Studies) This project will update an existing open textbook, Introduction to Sociology, and align content with Sociology 101. Changes will include updating figures and tables with the latest materials from Statistics Canada, OECD, Our World Data and similar sources, and adding examples and news events that resonate with students.
Cellular and Molecular Biology Images for Teaching Sequential Course to Students Studying in Multiple Areas of the Biological Sciences (submitted by Dr. Laura Lemieux, lecturer, Department of Biology) This project will produce high-quality educational images of cellular and molecular biology processes that can be freely shared, modified, and utilized in several courses.
As part of the Library’s mission to make learning materials freely accessible and available, the Staebler Insurance OER Fellows Grant supports the creation of open education resources at Waterloo. The Library, along with support from Staebler Insurance, the Centre for Extended Learning’s Agile Development Team and the Open Education Working Group, provides Waterloo instructors with competitive grants of up to $5,000 each to help create or adapt an open educational resource (OER) for a Waterloo course. Stay tuned for updates on these projects next March during Open Education Week.
