Although its exact origin is unknown, this vellum-bound manuscript recipe book likely dates back to the early 19th century. Most of the recipes are for desserts and jellies (e.g. orange tarts, plumb cake, apricot jam, etc.), but recipes for non-sweets (green pea soup, soy sauce, girkins, etc.) and a few cough remedies are also included. The handwriting ranges from very crude to a near perfect calligraphic hand. A selection of the recipes are signed and names include Mary Dawson, M. Moore, N.B., and S. Lowels.
