Throughout his tour of the Soviet Union, Spencer took a large number of photographs. The pictures depict a particularly interesting period: Stalin's reign had only just begun, the country is in its early stages of industrialization, and it is a year before the nation is ravaged by famine. Hope and enthusiasm, according to Spencer, characterize the Soviet people at this point.
 
The galleries are only broadly divided, and many photos can fit under one or more themes. Some loose photographs are inscribed on the back, while a select few are pasted and captioned in Spencer's scrapbook.
