Dr. Victor Spear

Dr. Victor Spear has always believed in the power of investing in the future — and now, he’s leading by example. As a dedicated member of the Seeing Beyond 20/20 Campaign Steering Committee, Dr. Spear is stepping up with an incredible offer: for every dollar you donate, he will personally match it—up to $250,000!

With support from many like him, construction of the Waterloo Eye Institute (WEI) is now in full swing. This once-in-a-generation project has already captured the hearts and support of the profession - but there’s still more to be done.

"We’re at a pivotal moment," says Dr. Spear. "The support from my colleagues has been nothing short of inspiring. Our education has enriched our lives and equipped us to enhance vision for countless patients. Now, it’s time for all of us to give back."

In a rapidly evolving world, it is vital to keep Optometry at the forefront of eye care across Canada. Thanks to the generosity of many, the campaign has already raised an astonishing $28 million toward its $35 million goal. With only $7 million left, the finish line is within sight.

Dr. Spear’s challenge gives us all the chance to double our impact, making this the perfect time to contribute. Every dollar you give will be matched, turning your generosity into a force that drives the profession forward.

"I hope this challenge inspires others to step up—whether it’s a new contribution or an extension of previous support. Together, we can turn our vision into a reality," Dr. Spear continues. "When everyone pitches in, the impact is remarkable."

Dr. Stan Woo, Director of the School of Optometry & Vision Science, emphasizes the urgency: "With construction underway, the final push is more critical than ever. Every gift, no matter the size, gets us closer to our goal."

A lifelong supporter of optometry, Dr. Spear’s commitment is deeply personal. From serving as a clinical supervisor to advocating for cutting-edge advancements, his contributions span decades. His passion for the field remains as strong as ever, continuing his family legacy of leadership in eye care.

"Supporting the School of Optometry & Vision Science has been one of the most rewarding journeys of my life," says Dr. Spear. "The Waterloo Eye Institute will propel our profession forward, ensuring we remain the cornerstone of eye care in Canada. I invite everyone to join me in pushing it across the finish line."

This is your chance to be part of something historic. Every dollar you give will be matched—doubling the impact and bringing the WEI closer to reality. Together, we can make it happen -- for ourselves, for the future of the profession, and for Canadian patients.
