Information for faculty, staff and student researchers
Translating research into real-life use isn’t a process that’s one size fits all. You might choose to patent an invention and licence it for someone else to take further. You might choose to work with an industry partner to co-develop a product. Or you might want to start your own company.
The first thing to know is that publishing or presenting in detail about your research without first protecting your IP could jeopardize your ability to patent it. The Waterloo Commercialization Office (WatCo) can advise you. Want to turn your idea into a startup? Velocity can help.
