Xiaoye Michael Wang
Biography
Dr. Xiaoye “Michael” Wang is an Assistant Professor in the School of Optometry and Vision Science at the University of Waterloo. He completed a BA in Psychology and Philosophy at Denison University and a PhD in Psychology and Cognitive Science at Indiana University Bloomington. He subsequently held postdoctoral fellowships at the Centre for Vision Research at York University and in the Faculty of Kinesiology and Physical Education at the University of Toronto.
Dr. Wang’s research examines how people perceive three-dimensional space and use vision to guide their actions. Combining behavioural experiments with computational and geometric modelling, he investigates how binocular vision and motion information support depth perception and movement control. His current research focuses on how virtual and mixed reality alter perception and action, how people adapt to these changes, and how learning transfers between immersive and physical environments. He also develops computational methods for analysing human movement, including the use of deep neural networks to quantify similarities in basketball movement patterns in collaboration with the Sports Performance Lab at MLSE. His work connects fundamental questions about human perception and motor control with applications in immersive technology, training, rehabilitation, and sport.
