Cadieux-Léger Fellowship - Research Affiliate Program

Do you want to gain valuable experience working in an area related to your studies while contributing to the advancement of Canada’s international interests? The Cadieux-Léger Fellowship, now in its 27th year, provides direct experience in a policy research environment focused on the diverse challenges facing Canadian foreign policy.

Applying for the Cadieux-Léger Fellowship is done through the Research Affiliate Program (RAP). Only candidates that have completed this step of the process will be considered.

The deadline for applications is no later than December 11, 2020. Due to the need to balance operational needs with public health requirements, candidates will be expected to work from home remotely, but be capable of in-person attendance in a work setting in Ottawa where required.

Due to the high volume of receipt of applications, only the students selected for an interview will be contacted.

Eligibility criteria

The candidate must be enrolled in a doctorate program as a full-time student in a recognized post-secondary institution with a specialization in Political Science or International Relations, or Economics or Law or a related program.*

*The candidate must be recognized as having full-time student status by the academic institution in which they are presently enrolled and maintain this status during the whole fellowship period.

Ontario Women's Health Scholars Award

There is no department or faculty involvement in the adjudication process for this award. Interested applicants should apply directly to GSPA.

Funded by the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care, a Scholar Awards Program in Women’s Health has been established to ensure that Ontario attracts and retains pre-eminent women’s health scholars. The community of women’s health scholars fostered by this Awards program will excel, according to internationally accepted standards of scientific excellence, in the creation of new knowledge about women’s health and its translation into improved health for women, more effective health services and products for women, and a strengthened heath care system.

Please find attached the official announcement for the Ontario Women’s Health Scholars Award for the 2021-2022 academic year in which the agency will award the following:

  • three one-year awards of $25,000 (plus a research allowance of $1,000) at the master’s level;
  • three renewable one-year awards of $35,000 (plus a research allowance of $2,000) at the doctoral level; and
  • two one-year awards of $50,000 (plus a research allowance of $5,000) at the postdoctoral level.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants should review the attached announcement or COU website and review the full eligibility criteria details. Below is a summary:

  • A Canadian citizen or a permanent resident of Canada as of January 29, 2021.
  • For masters or doctoral awards, applicants must be registered as a full-time student in a master’s or doctoral program at an Ontario university at the beginning of the award period (fall 2021) and remain registered as a full-time student throughout the term of the award.
  • For postdoctoral awards, applicants must be engaged in full-time research at an Ontario university at the time of taking up the award (i.e., September 1, 2021), and must have completed all requirements for the doctoral degree by the application deadline and normally no earlier than January 31, 2018). In cases where an applicant completed all requirements for the doctoral degree before this date, an explanation (e.g., childrearing responsibilities) must accompany the application.
  • The recipient is precluded from holding any other award that offers financial support of more than $20,000 for the period in which the award would be held.

Additional Requirements:

  • A master’s student remains eligible until the end of the sixth term of full-time study.
  • A doctoral student remains eligible until the end of the 15th term of full-time study.

    • Upon receipt of a complete application, GSPA will automatically generate an official UW transcript and retrieve copies of official non-Waterloo transcripts which were submitted as part of the applicant’s admission application.
    • Applicants do not need to submit transcripts with their application. Instead, applicants must list in the body of their submission email to Laura Frazee all previous institutions (and degrees, if applicable) that they have attended including Waterloo; (e.g. University of Waterloo – Bachelor of Science; University of Toronto - Master of Science; Western University – single course).
       
  • Reference Letters:
    • Two reference letters are required for Master’s and Doctoral applicants; Four reference letters are required for postdoctoral applicants.

    • Letters should focus on an evaluation of the applicant’s research to date, and on the research the applicant proposes to undertake during the period of the award, paying particular attention to the criteria for selection. Assessor should also provide a short description of the relationship, if any, with the applicant.
    • For postdoctoral applications, two of the assessors must not have been associated with the candidate as either a supervisor, or a member of the candidate’s supervisory committee, or a co-author; and if at all possible, not at the university at which the applicant was a doctoral student.

Current doctoral level award holders may be eligible for award renewal.

University Adjudication

Each institution is permitted to put forward a maximum of two applications per award level (Master’s, Doctoral and Postdoctoral), for a maximum of six applications from each institution. Depending on the number of applications received, the Advisory Committee on Graduate Scholarships & Awards or the Assistant Vice-President, Graduate Studies and Postdoctoral Affairs will review and rank the applications. Once selection has been made, the University will submit the applications to the Council of Ontario Universities by January 20, 2021. Applicants will receive notification from GSPA informing them whether or not their application was forwarded to COU for consideration.

Competition Launch - Autism Scholars Award

There is no department or faculty involvement in the adjudication process for this award. Interested applicants should apply directly to GSPA.

With the support of the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities (MTCU), a Scholar Awards Program in Autism was established to ensure that Ontario attracts and retains pre-eminent scholars.  The community of autism scholars fostered by this Awards Program will excel, according to internationally accepted standards of scientific excellence, in the creation of new knowledge concerning child autism, and its translation into improved health for children, more effective services and products for children with autism, and increase the province’s capacity in diagnosis and assessment of autism and a strengthened treatment system.

Up to one award at the Master’s level valued at $18,000 and up to one award at the Doctoral level valued at $20,000 will be made during this competition.

Competition Launch - Mackenzie King Scholarships

The Mackenzie King Scholarships were established as an independent trust under the will of the late Rt. Hon. William Mackenzie King (1874-1950). The two categories of scholarship are:

  1. Mackenzie King Open Scholarship: The Open Scholarship is available to graduates of Canadian universities who pursue graduate studies in any discipline, in Canada or elsewhere.  One Open Scholarship is awarded each year. The value has recently been about $9,000 but it is subject to change.
  2. Mackenzie King Travelling Scholarship: The Travelling Scholarship is available to graduates of Canadian universities who pursue graduate studies in the United States or the United Kingdom in the areas of international relations or industrial relations.  Recently four scholarships of about $11,500 each have been awarded annually, but the number and the amount are subject to change.

Selection Criteria:

  • High academic achievements (typically all A’s or very nearly so)
  • Personal qualities, and demonstrated aptitudes
  • Consideration will also be given to the applicant’s proposed program of study

Instructions for Applicants:

    Complete application packages must be submitted to the student’s Department Graduate Co-ordinator by February 1, 2021. Complete application packages include the following:

  • Reference Letters:
    • Three letters of reference are required from persons who have an intimate knowledge of your record and ability and are able to give a critical evaluation of your plans for graduate study. At least two of these testimonials must be from persons under whom you have taken your major work at university, or from senior colleagues with whom you have been associated in academic teaching or research.
    • These must be signed, on letterhead and sent directly by your referee to the department graduate co-ordinator by February 1, 2021.
       
  • Transcripts:
    • After you submit your application to your department, your department co-ordinator will produce/print copies of all post-secondary transcripts (Waterloo and non-Waterloo) which were submitted at the time of admittance to Waterloo. These will be used for review purposes. You do not need to order new official hard-copy transcripts unless Waterloo does not have a copy on-file, in which case you should contact your department co-ordinator to arrange to have these submitted by February 1.

Charles Polanyi Prize (postdoctoral) competition launch

The Polanyi Prize postdoctoral competition provides up to five prizes annually to outstanding researchers in the early stages of their career and at Ontario universities. These postdoctoral prizes (tax-exempt) are valued at $20,000 each and are available in the areas broadly defined as Physics, Chemistry, Physiology or Medicine, Literature and Economic Science.

Azrieli International Postdoctoral Fellowship

The Azrieli International Postdoctoral Fellowship supports the best and brightest minds in their postdoctoral research, connecting them with world-class academics and leading researchers. The Azrieli Fellows Program promotes academic leadership and encourages academic and professional links between Israel and the rest of the world.

The Azrieli Foundation is launching its revamped International Postdoctoral Fellowship for research at Israeli universities in STEM, Humanities and Social Sciences. This new program is aimed at bringing 24 outstanding postdoctoral students from Europe and Canada to Israel, each year.  

The value of the Fellowship is approximately € 47,000 (ILS 188,000) per year, including funds reserved for research and travel.  

The program offers opportunities for interdisciplinary and cross-cultural exchange, leadership training, community engagement, professional mentorship, and a growing alumni network. To ensure optimal conditions, the Program provides a warm and welcoming staff dedicated to the wellbeing of Azrieli Fellows.

Hugh C. Morris Experiential Learning Fellowship

The Hugh C. Morris Experiential Learning Fellowship, valued at $40,000 Cdn, is open to any graduate student studying in Canada who is working in a field related to earth, geosciences, environment, alternative energy, water, climate change, sustainability, or to the social impact, social sciences or design sciences related to these areas, and is designed to provide a unique experiential, international travel program designed by the student to engage diverse sectors, advance their research, learn from a range of contexts and cultures, and bring their learning back to Canada. Facebook Fellowship

The Facebook Fellowship is a global program designed to encourage and support promising doctoral students who are engaged in innovative and relevant research in areas related to computer science and engineering at an accredited university.
 
The program is open to students in any year of their PhD study. People of diverse backgrounds and experiences are encouraged to apply, especially those from traditionally under-represented minority groups. Applications are evaluated based on the strength of the student’s research statement, publication record, and recommendation letters.
 
The Fellowship award includes:

  • Tuition and fees paid for the academic year (up to two years/four semesters)
  • A $42,000 annual stipend to cover living and conference travel costs
  • Paid visit to Facebook headquarters for the annual Fellowship Summit (pending COVID-19 restrictions.

J. Alan George Student Leadership Award

The J. Alan George Student Leadership Award is presented to an entering graduate student, chosen from among students within three terms of first receipt of a Provost Doctoral Entrance Award for Women and based on a record of student leadership.
 
Value:
For the 2020/2021 competition, 2 awards valued at $2,500 each will be awarded.
 
Eligibility:
To be eligible for the award applicants must:

  • currently registered full-time within their first year of doctoral studies at the University of Waterloo
  • applicants must be within three terms of first receipt of a Provost Doctoral Entrance Award for Women – this is a MUST (if student is just being nominated for Fall 2020, then they are eligible)
  • applicants must demonstrate outstanding student leadership

 
Application:
Completed application must be submitted to the department for ranking purposes (by October 15, 2020) before being forwarded to GSPA.

Graduate Student International Experience award

International Experience Awards

Several international experience award funds are available to University of Waterloo graduate students who participate in: an academic exchange, a study term related to their research (field work) or an academic requirement (placement), work, or volunteer experience. Award selection is based on a variety of factors such as academic achievement, financial need, length, location, nature of experience and whether it is an applicants first time travelling to a destination etc. Only one application is required in order to be considered for any of the International Experience Awards (see brief descriptions below).

 The value and number of awards vary.

General Eligibility and Selection Criteria:

  • These awards are intended to provide support for upcoming international experiences, not past experiences while you are a graduate student. (Students should apply as soon as they are able to confirm details of their intended experience by one of the deadlines below).
  • Travel duration:
    • Full-term Experience (for UW Student Mobility Funding Program)
    • Minimum of 8 weeks (for David Johnston International Experience Awards)
    • Minimum of 8 weeks, however travel lasting at least 4 weeks may be considered and awarded at a reduced value (for UW International Experience Award)
  • Students must be full‐time and in good academic standing in order to be considered. Some awards require a specific level of academic achievement.
  • Some of these awards are based fully or partially on financial need.
  • Funding is generally limited to one award per student in a given year due to the large number of applications received. 

Specific Awards:

David Johnston International Experience Awards – open to Canadian Citizens/Permanent Residents or international students, min. 75% graduate average required, for travel anywhere however several specific awards fall under this broader award, including one for travel to Israel (see Lebovic) and another for travel to developing countries (see McCall MacBain).

UW International Experience Awards – open only to Canadian Citizens/Permanent Residents and residents of Ontario, must have demonstrated financial need (have applied for OSAP for the term travelling unless restricted), for travel anywhere.

UW Student Mobility Funding Program – for travel anywhere, with preference given to students with financial need.  Several awards fall under this broader award which have specific eligibility requirements (see UW International Travel Award, Hume , Johnson, Kerr and LeDrew.)

Application/Deadline:

Apply by completing the Graduate Student International Experience Award application. This general application will be used to consider you for any of the international experience awards that you may be eligible for. Submit the completed application and all required supporting documentation (as outlined on the application checklist) on or before the deadline to emachado@uwaterloo.ca or to The Centre, Ira G. Needles Hall (NH), first floor. Award selection takes place each term. Please apply by the deadline for the term in which you will be travelling:

Spring (May-August) term travel – March 15

Fall (Sept-Dec) term travel – July 15

Winter (Jan-Apr) term travel – November 15

GSPA will communicate with applicants regarding the competition results within approximately three weeks of the award deadline.

Graduate Studies Research Travel Assistantship

Graduate Studies and Postdoctoral Affairs (GSPA) and the Graduate Studies Endowment Fund (GSEF) assist the University of Waterloo graduate students to attend professional conferences, and present their research.  Students should use this form to reserve travel funds from their supervisor, Department/School, Faculty and GSPA.

*Note: Confirmation of presentation and abstract may be submitted with the Travel Advance and Settlement Claim after travel and are not required with this application for funding.  The amount reserved per student by GSPA will not exceed $500.

***NEW - Academic Readiness Bursary

The Academic Readiness Bursary provides assistance for students who are or will be registered in the fall 2020 term and who may incur costs related to studying remotely in the fall term, as a result of COVID-19.

We areaccepting applications up until September 30, 2020 for expenses incurred from July 1 until September 30, 2020. Please note that funding is limited, so to assist as many students as possible, this bursary will not exceed $500 per student (additional support may be considered if you have dependents).

Ardeth Wood Memorial Bursary in Philosophy

The Department of Philosophy at the University of Waterloo is privileged to establish the Ardeth Wood Memorial Graduate Bursary. It will be presented yearly to a graduate student (preference will be given to female graduate students) in the Department of Philosophy based on merit, involvement in the graduate community, and proven financial need.

Applicants are to apply in the Fall term by using the Graduate Student Award Application form found on the Graduate Studies form site.  Applications are to be submitted to Graduate Studies and Postdoctoral Affairs in Needles Hall.

Graduate Studies Parental Leave Bursary

Value: Up to $5,000 for the first term, up to $3,000 for the second term.

The University of Waterloo will provide an eight-month birth and parental leave (includes adoption) bursary to eligible graduate students. The bursary, together with any other continuing support, is intended to maintain income at about 95% of the average level of income received by the student during the three previous academic terms, less tuition.

Waterloo Centre for German Studies Internship

The Waterloo Centre for German Studies is seeking qualified graduate students for a new internship, and we'd like help in spreading the word about this opportunity.

As a Public German Studies intern, you will assist the Waterloo Centre for German Studies in communicating scholarly research to both academic and public audiences. During the period of the internship, you will put your communication and research skills to use while developing or deepening skills in web content design and management, podcast production, and social media promotion.
 
This internship is intended to provide graduate students in German studies with an opportunity to learn about and gain skills in public scholarship. Previous experience with this area of scholarly communication is helpful but not required. As a Public German Studies intern, you will receive mentorship and training to support your work.
 
The internship requires a commitment of 100 hours (approximately 5 hours/week). The internship begins in October, but starting and end dates are negotiable. Remuneration is $25/hour. Interns will work remotely.
