ETHOS: the complex interplay between dark and baryonic physics in galaxy formation and evolution

The Cold Dark Matter (CDM) hypothesis remains the cornerstone for the current modeling of galaxy formation and evolution. Despite the success and appeal of CDM, outstanding challenges remain at subgalactic scales. Solutions to these problems have been proposed invoking either known but uncertain complex gas and stellar physics (baryonic physics) or unknown new dark matter physics. In this talk I will present a review of the current situation and argue that a unified picture is needed to explore galaxy formation and evolution in the broadest sense (ETHOS framework).
I will discuss the challenges ahead in disentangling dark and baryonic physics.
