“What is a noncommutative torus?”

We’ll give a relaxed introduction to the construction of so-called noncommutative tori. Such objects are actually noncommutative algebras obtained by deforming the algebra of complex- valued smooth functions on a two-dimensional torus, and such rings have many interesting properties. We’ll try to give hints of the interactions between C*-algebras, the theory of elliptic curves, and noncommutative algebra in this setting. Not much background will be assumed, but at the same time we will only give statements of some of the big results in this area.
