"Tropical Curves and Where to Find Them"
This talk will have three simple goals, first, what is a tropical curve/variety, second, how do we define them abstractly, and third, one tiny application. We will first define what a tropical semiring is, along with interesting applications of general theory of tropical geometry. Then we will specialize to tropical curves, talk about dual graphs, and the moduli space of tropical curves. Finally we will introduce one simple application of this to the cohomology of M_{g,n}.
This seminar will be held jointly online and in person:

The University of Waterloo acknowledges that much of our work takes place on the traditional territory of the Neutral, Anishinaabeg and Haudenosaunee peoples. Our main campus is situated on the Haldimand Tract, the land granted to the Six Nations that includes six miles on each side of the Grand River. Our active work toward reconciliation takes place across our campuses through research, learning, teaching, and community building, and is centralized within our Office of Indigenous Relations.
