“The Variational Lemma and Einstein equation”
We will work through section 8 of the Lee/Parker paper on the Yamabe problem. In particular, we will show how the vacuum Einstein equations arise from the first variation of the Einstein-Hilbert action. We’ll then restrict this variation to asymptotically flat metrics, from which we will get the geometric quantities needed to state the positive mass theorem.
