“Varieties versus schemes, Part II”

Last week, we saw examples of schemes that illustrated how, in some cases, schemes provide a better framework for studying families or intersections of varieties than classical algebraic geometry. This week, we will continue with this theme by presenting examples of schemes appearing in the local study of varieties as well as in arithmetic geometry.
