“The geometry of Yang-Mills fields, Part 02”

Throughout the spring 2013 term, we will (as a group) be reading through and lecturing on ”The Geometry of Yang-Mills Fields” by Sir Michael Atiyah. All are welcome to attend.

David Pazmino Pullas

”How do you recognize S2 ∨ S4 from CP2?”

They seem to be different spaces (non-homotopic), but both their fundamental groups and their homology groups coincide, so seems like we need to find another topological invariant... We will explore the definitions and some basic properties of higher homotopy groups, which are essentially a generalization of the notion of the fundamental group of a topological space. We will review some simple properties of them including some examples of computations (in particular we will find the answer to the proposed question).
