“Inspector Gadget’s Dilemma and Other Short Stories”

Inspector gadget’s dilemma, or as it’s more commonly known, the extension problem, is a central part of our quest to prove some of the group theory statements outlined last week.

I will explain his dilemma, connect it to group cohomology, and begin the long journey towards proving the first of our statements (Corollary 3.13 on page 93 of Kenneth Brown’s Cohomology of Groups). This journey will begin with complexes and resolutions.
