Arundhathi Krishnan, Pure Mathematics, University of Waterloo
This is the first talk in a sequence of learning seminar meetings aimed towards probabilistic aspects of the Thompson monoid. The first meetings of the seminar will stay faithful to the "learning seminar" spirit, and will cover basic material about monoids defined by generators and relations -- we will talk for instance about normal forms, about the notion of a "right LCM" monoid, and about the combinatorics of the Garside structure. There will be some fundamental examples that will keep re-appearing in the discussion, most notably the right-angled Artin monoids and the Thompson monoid F+. We will eventually focus on the latter and we will discuss some non-commutative probability aspects that are inherently built into it, as was put into evidence in a recent paper by Koestler, Krishnan and Wills.
