“Beta representations and Pisot numbers”

We define a Pisot number γ as a real algebraic integer strictly greater than 1 such that all of the conjugates of γ are strictly less than 1 in absolute value. Pisot numbers have a number of very unusual and interesting properties. In this talk we will attempt to give an overview of some of these properties.
